5 Tips on Saving Electricity

Life without electricity is hard to imagine. In our homes, we depend on it to power our lights, appliances, and electronics. But in recent years saving electricity at home has become increasingly important. Using electricity without consideration to conserving energy contributes to global warming and leads to massive electricity bills.

Though we have electricity at our disposal, there are still some people who don’t know how to utilize electricity. Saving electricity by adopting certain measures is a smart, cost-effective and persuasive environmental action that anyone can take. By following a few simple steps, saving electricity can become a real easy task.

#1- Properly Insulate by Sealing Air Leaks

Many people do not realize how much money they are losing by having air leaks in their home. When you are trying to heat or cool your home, those pesky air leaks will only make it more difficult to achieve your desired home temperature. Take the time to walk around your house and figure out where air is leaking out of your home. Once you seal up those leaks, you will see your energy consumption decrease and you will save money on your electricity bill.

#2- Stray from Hot Water

Water can be very costly to heat, especially when hot water is needed numerous times a day. A great way to keep your power bill low is to wash your clothes and dishes in cold water, and to take shorter showers. Washing your clothes and dirty dishes in cold water not only stops your colors from running, but it won’t use any electricity to heat up the water. Taking shorter showers is the same idea. The less hot water used, the less electricity consumed by the hot water heater. Overtime, this adds up to savings in your pocket.

#3- Utilize Smaller Appliances

Why reheat a slice of pizza in a large, conventional oven when a smaller toaster oven can do the exact same job? Toaster ovens create the same heat, but use far less power than an ordinary oven. Not only do toaster ovens heat up quicker and cook your food faster than a traditional oven, it also uses significantly less power. For items that need to be baked and are small enough for a toaster oven, don’t waste money using your conventional oven.

#4- Air Dry Your Clothes

Most people do not realize how costly it can be to run their dryer, especially if they are doing it numerous times a week. Dryers are large machines that need massive amounts of power to run. As nice as it is to have warm, dry clothes in an hour, it is not so nice on your wallet. By being patient and air-drying your clothes, you will find yourself saving money on your electricity bill every week.

#5- Open the Blinds!

Utilizing natural light is a great way to brighten your home, while keeping your power bill low. Turn off the lights and turn on the sun! Windows that face the south receive the most amount of sunlight throughout the year. To help save money on your electricity bill, figure out the rooms in your home that receive the most natural light, and then utilize the free light! Open the shades, turn of the lights, and let the light shine in through the windows. As time goes on, you will be saving money on every single light bulb that you turn off as you replace artificial light with natural light.
